KNOW YOU GOT

Know You Got is half art happening, half straight-up good time. The project turns the gallery from a space for viewing art, into a site where the audiences’ “soul”, or sense of self-expression, becomes encouraged, displayed, and celebrated.

The work is inspired by the visual similarity between Marina Abramovic and Ulay’s Imponderabilia, where the pair stood naked at the door of the gallery to direct visitors between their bodies, and Soul Train’s generation-defining line dances, where the gang strut their stuff down an aisle created by rows of dancers.

For Know You Got, unbeknownst visitors will be greeted by the sound of vintage funk tracks and rows of participants clapping and cheering them as they enter the door of the gallery. The spontaneous reaction of the entrants will be documented and the footage will be edited and broadcasted as a show.
